The Last One

I swear, this is the last owl quilt!

Months ago my BFF thought it would be funny to commemorate her brother's new logging job in Oregon, with a spotted owl quilt.

So all those other owl quilts were practice for this the finally one.

When Lily was born last month, I realized I had forgotten to make her quilt. Then came jury duty. Finally I remembered again this weekend I got to it.

So here it is, the last owls I'll ever do. I think...

"C" is for closet

The quilting is done, the binding in place. Last thing to do, hang it over the window. Complete, yay!

This is my third UFO to finish this year. I hope I can keep it up. I have 15 more to go and most of those are large quilts.

I took the next UFO out, my red and white houses. I already had it pinned so I thought it should be next. AND because I said I wanted it on my bed this winter.
It was so cold last night, I woke up to a frozen nose! It's time to get that quilt on my bed, ASAP!

I also whipped up a baby quilt this weekend. I'll show you tomorrow after I deliver it today.

And shame on me, I started a new project. I used the excuse that I needed an appliqué project to take with me.
Well, I'm now on my second block and by the end of today, I may have started the third. Bad Brandie! I'm so weak!

Hanging Flimsy

I think I figured it out. What do you think?
I added these diamonds between the blocks to lengthen it and a pointed bottom.
Now I'll layer it and quilt it up and show you all the reveal on Monday.

Another UFO that I've been working on. This one dates back to 2009.
My friend E and I liked this block from Michele Hill's book, William Morris in Appliqué, so we both started one. Not sure if she finished hers either.

For mine I thought it would make a great wall hanging to cover my closet door.
Years ago when we were painting this room, we discovered that the old fashioned door actually had a glass insert that had been painted over. So we scraped the paint off and now I can look into my closet and see all my clothes. Hmmm, I guess that's why the glass was painted over.
Ultimately, I'd like to make a stained glass insert, but I never seem to have the time. So a wall hanging will be much faster, maybe.
These stems are taking forever! I even re-drew them. The book was written with the intent of fusing these pieces, but I'm a needle turner and so I just had to work a little harder to get it perfect.

I'm working on my second block now. Then I need to come up with a way to extend it three more inches to cover the glass. But I'll wait till I finish the second block to figure that out.

No Longer Blue

... from jury duty that is. I've been released! I really can't tell you how good that makes me feel. What a waste of all our time and money. The defendant was (in my opinion) trying to pull a fast one and delay as long as possible. We the jury, sat for hours in a room, with the total amount of court room time under an hour. We spent most of a week in a locked room. How boring! And in the end it was declared a mistrial.

Of course on the last day I figured out how to use the free Internet.
I meet a few interesting people in the process.
I wasn't allowed to being my appliqué into the court house, but I had my phone and it was loaded with books.

Honestly, I hope I never have to do this again.

But I did a little sewing on the days I wasn't too tired when I returned home.

My Favorite cousin (yes I'm bias) is getting married sometime in the fall. I would love to show her my feelings with a quilt. So I found a blue that wasn't too feminine and cut into all my blue scraps.
She has been collecting Blue Willow china for years. So I went with a blue theme.
Now when I said years, I meant it. Don't tell her I told you, but she is two years younger than I am, which we all know is old.
This is her first "real" relationship and I'm thrilled to the bone for her!
Being her first marriage and if I know her, the only, this is a super big deal. And even though this is against my rules of starting anything new, I'm breaking that rule. Just this once.

I figure if start now and do a bit every day, I'll have it finished by fall.

So far I have about 30 nine-patches done. I'll need about 70 more. Than on to the 100 snowballed squares.
That blue fabric will be a border.
My goal is a very scrappy quilt.

This will be on going between finishing up UFOs.
I'll keep you posted.

Absinthe Minded

After fighting a head cold for the last few days, I've finished my third quilt this year. Hurray!

I've spent all morning sneezing and stitching on my crazy binding. In no way is this a traditional quilt. Crazy quilt is more like it!

How do you like it's name? Absinthe Minded is my Hubby's brilliant suggestion. I love it! Appropriately named.

Glad to mark another UFO off my list. Time to start another!

I've drawn a name from the hat, and that name is, Sunny! Congratulation Sunny!

I like this "Pass it on" idea so much, I know I'll be doing it again soon. So keep watching for another one to adopt.

Pass It On

How would you like your name on this mystery box? I won't tell you exactly what's in it, but I will say there are more books and patterns then fabric.

First a few rules.
You need to be a blogger, so that you can "pass it on" to another blogger and keep us posted as to where it's going.

You must be willing to ship it on to the next person.

You have to part with leftovers. Things like orphan blocks, books you have no use for, fabrics that just don't float your boat. Maybe a sewing tool you don't use. You don't need to buy anything, just gently used leftovers.

Everything you adopt needs to be replace with something you don't need.

Green Devil

Have you ever heard of Absinthe? Did you know that many artists were said to be under its influence. Many like, Van Gogh, Picasso, Degas, Poe, Verne, Wilde and Hemingway.
When I look at this green devil of a quilt, I think I must have been drinking absinthe! What was I thinking?

Now don't misunderstand me, I'm in No Way an artist like any of the above mentioned. I'm just relating myself to the crazy part, not the artistic part.

This quilt is my crazy concoction of unrelated blocks trying to work together. And it doesn't. But it too late so I'm going for it.

But I just may name this quilt "Absinthe", and if I do, we'll all know why.

Green Fantasy

I've been working on "that" green quilt between babysitting jobs.
My friend Nichole had a sweet baby girl Friday afternoon. Which left me with Hailey. She sure was a sweetie, but not very helpful in the sewing department!

But during some quiet moments, I pulled out that Green quilt. I did manage to get it sandwiched and did most of the straight line quilting. Who knows where this is going, but I'll figure it out when I get there.

I thought some swirly circles would look nice around the dragonfly. I do like. What I don't like? Metallic thread! It keeps breaking on me! But I've started and I need to continue. I think it'll look nice on the wings, if I even get the thread to work!

Any hints?

Quick Finish

Well here it is, a completed quilt-along quilt. All ready to go for the next baby. Assuming that it's a girl and these are the nursery colors.
Again if you haven't done a quilt-along with Lori, I strongly suggest that you do. They're quick and fun. And if you're like me, you make them bigger or add borders and you have a baby quilt.
So check it out. She has other tutorials too.

While I was going through my stash looking for fabric, I came across a few things I probably will never use again. Books, patterns, fabric and what nots. I have a thought, what about a "Pass it on" box that will travel from blogger to blogger with items removed and then replaced with the next bloggers leftovers. What do you think of this idea? I not talking about new everything. I talking books that no longer appeal to us. Patterns that we will never use again. Fabric we now find ugly or just know we'll never get around to it.
Let me know what you think. Because I'm sure another persons leftovers may be someone else treasure box.

Flimsy Finish

Here's a little flimsy finish. Yesterday I sat down and used my rotary cutter, with little pain, so I'm truly on the mend. I made Lori's little quilt-along quilt. But I don't think the name Pink Lemonade works for mine.
I used the Aster Manor fabric collection for the blocks and just stashed fabric for the borders.
As usual, this has been an excellent quilt-along. Lori gives great instructions and has always been very helpful. So if you haven't already, check out her blog (Humble Quilts).

Don't I have the best fabric holders?! Maximus is doing an impression of a paper weight. He's making sure that flimsy doesn't fly away.

First Finish!

I did it! I finished a quilt. Not as impressive as Lori's from Humble Quilts, but I'm happy. The only thing left to do is name it and put a label on it. My first finish of 2012.

Remember these started as pre-cut lozenge shapes. I then started to piece them together and than appliquéd them to unbleached muslin.
I carried them with me to meeting and I think it took me most of the year.
I had it all sandwiched by December than I had to take time off because of my unfortunate finger accident.
But I'm on a roll now!
This weekend I buckled down and just started quilting and finally finish yesterday about noon. Then I throw the whole dirty quilt into the wash and let it soak for about four hours.
Those lozenge shapes were starched and dirty from years of being tossed around. But they're clean now!
And of course I throw it into the dry to get it all crinkly. I love that look. It's so inviting.
So there you have it, Dirty Dresdens to beautiful antique.

I just did a simple 1/2 inch quilting all around. I decided against feathers. One, I didn't know if my hand was up to it and two, I didn't want to take away from the Dresdens.
I'm thrilled with the way it looks. Right down to my monogram. This is my quilt and ain't nobody can say different.

Old Rings

I did some quilting! I'm so happy! This has been a long time coming. I've been going stir crazy being away from my machine.

Yesterday I quilting the inside of all the individual Dresden pieces (20 x 9 = 180). This took me a couple of hours, with chores between, but I managed fine. No achy hand! Hurray!

So then I decided to quilt some more. I only made it around one square, till I had to stop because my back ached. Haha, I just can't seem to win.

But don't worry, I woke up all refreshed and I'm off for a walk which always does wonders for my back.

A New Ring

Thank you all for all the well wishes and Holiday cheer. It's nice to have friends like you. You are all kind, talented and inspiring.
While I've been away, I've been having a mild pity party. Little things would set me off like, not being able to pull up my big-girl-panties. Tie my own shoes. Type. Text. Wash dishes. The list goes on. Losing the middle finger affects the whole hand. But Good News, it is now on the mend (hopefully).
Since you've all been so patient, I'll tell you the WHOLE story, just no laughing.

It all started at a buffet. You know, one of those places that with every serving spoon you're sharing everyone else's germs. As I usually do, I washed my hands after fixing a plate. While at the sink, silently singing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star", I somehow twisted my middle finger hearing an audible pop. It sounded just like when my kids crack their knuckles, but when I did it, I felt intense pain. It felt as if a pea sized piece of glass was inside my knuckle. I couldn't bend my finger.
Retuning to the table I showed my Husband and of course he laughed that I over washed my hands.
Dinner was a disaster. I ended up using my left hand to eat with.

Three days later, I meet some of my quilting buddies who thought my fashion statement of a taped straight middle finger was a no-no. After their scare tactics, telling me that finger would fuse that way, they convinced me to go to the Dr.
Well, confession time. I don't have a Dr. When I have to go, I just go to the urgent care down the street. I guess it has been awhile because when I got there I found out that the insurance I've had for a year wasn't accepted there. So they sent me to the clinic. Eeewww! But I went.
They made me an appointment to see a Dr downstairs. They told me I was seeing an OB-GYN. Seriously!
Being the obedient person that I am, I went downstairs. The OB came into the room and I told her straight out," I just need you to assess my finger, I'm keeping all my clothes on". She asked how I hurt my finger and for the third time I had to hear the giggles.
Diagnosis, I had pulled the tendon in my finger that is connected at the top of my hand and will affect my whole hand until it heals. She also suggested that I take the tape off and move it. So I did. Boy what a quack!
I've since learned that wasn't the best advice. I had been re-injuring it every other day, hence the pity party.

What have I learned from this experience?
1. Most people don't sing while washing their hands

2. Other people don't wash each finger separately. But if you do, let me know

3. Never see an OB for a finger exam

4. Learn to laugh at yourself

So now that I've had my finger stationary for about a week, it feels so much better. I've been able to do dishes, tie my shoes and even pull up my big-girl-panties. I'm going to stop wallowing in pity and get back on the horse.
Today I'm going to see Gail and I'm going to attempt to quilt. As long as I don't have to use scissors, I'll be fine. This new ring is now a fashion statement. But I also know it's keeping that finger safe so it can heal thoroughly.

Tea Drippings

This is it. The last week before the big day. Are you ready? Me? As ready as I'll ever be.
This year I don't have much spirit. I'm trying, but failing.
Another thing that doesn't help, injuring myself. This last week my absence was cause be the inability to use my right hand, my favorite hand. Thank goodness it's on the mend now, or you wouldn't be hearing from me now.
What have I done now? I've pulled the tendon in my middle finger.
Before you all think I've over used it on the Holiday drivers, rest assured that wasn't it.
But I've heard nothing but giggles from those who know the real story. So you are all going to have to imagine a good story.

I do have a bit of show and tell. I can start to feel my hand ache so I need to cut this short.
I made a big mug rug for my coffee table. The small coasters just looked like toys to the dogs, so I made a big one. Simple. My only problem, making round circles, but the tissue box covers those imperfect circles.

If I don't get back before the week is out, have a Wonderful Holiday!

Star Light

I may have caught a little Holiday spirit. This week I finally got around to moving out all the fall decorations. (Except the Raven, his new home is in my dining and will stay there, forever!) But I had problems. I USE to keep decorations in my upstairs closet. Now that the girl moved back in, I needed to find a new place to keep my pillows, one big pillow. Remember the pumpkin pillow? Will it had to go. Then cousin Linda had a wonderful suggestion. Make a new cover! Shes so smart!

So I did. I went with a star theme and I think it turned out Great!

Ditched Dresdens

This quilt is becoming a favorite. I'm falling in love with my previous enemies, 30's prints. I've discovered a deep love for these dirty pieces of fabric.
What I think I like is the softness of these colors. The reproductions seem to have too much color for me. But I've had an epiphany. Why not tea or coffee stain the reproductions till their colors soften? If I do this, I'll let you know.

Anyway back to the quilt. I managed to complete all the stitching in the ditch. Next up, an actual era appropriate quilting motif.
I'm going to take my time and do the best job I can.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and I had another epiphany, I quilted my monogram in the middle Dresden. How cool is that?!
Of course when my Daughter came home, she renamed my initials into Something bad and dirty. Kids!
Yeah I laughed, but I'm none of those bad words.

Between quilting, I baked three applesauce cakes, an apple-cranberry pie and a loaf of bread. Boy did the house smell wonderful!

Today I've been working on a few stars. More about that tomorrow.

Waste Not

Remember the really green quilt? The one with the fairy, koi, water lilies and frog?
Well I discovered that I was over zealous in my cutting of strips. I knew I wanted a variety of strips in different sizes. What I didn't know was how many.
So to not be a waster, I sewed all those leftover strips into a backing for the quilt. How smart was that!?

I threw it all on the ground next to my chair and would grab any ol strip of fabric.
Of course there were quite a few small pieces but I just sewed them into bigger strips. Not bad, if I do say!

Next is to get that quilt finished up. That quilt show really got me off track! That is my plan for next week, get that green quilt sandwiched.

Ok, that's all from me at this moment. Time to get back to my chores.

Few Stitches

I have but a little in the way of sewing. Just a seam or two to add the hexies to the baskets. Shame on me.
As usual, I had a few more problems with my blocks. Have I mentioned before that I'm a terrible piecer?
After reading a friends post, I've rethought my problem. My problem may be that I tend to sew a scant quarter inch seam. So I'll have to make more of an effort to sew better.

Today I'm going to sit at my machine and do some stitching in the ditch.
Monday I went to see with Gail and I sandwiched my antique Dresdens. I'm really excited to get started quilting on it. Well partly excited. I do worry it might not be good enough... but I must go on. If I start to worry, than I'll second guess every stitch. There are times when I wish I had the money to send my quilts out to get quilted, but I also like knowing that this quilt is all my own, mistakes and all.

Shining Stars

This may be the only Christmas decoration I'll get up this year. I bought these paper stars at Ikea a couple months back and if cousin Linda hadn't called and asked me where I hung them, we might not have any decorations.
My son asked me if I wanted a tree. I think it was just an excuse to go four wheeling in the mountains. But I thought, where am I even going to find room for a tree? On top of the dining table that is sitting in front of the window seat? In front of the TV?
There just doesn't seem to be a place, yet. Besides, Christmas is about family, friends and food, not trees. Right?

I'm heading to my machine and hopefully by next week I'll have some more to show you.

BOM Baskets

I worked all morning making these #¥£ baskets. The smallest pieces are cut at one inch. Lynn, what are you doing to me?! I've unstiched one block twice and given up. It will just have to do. I'm tired. The second block came out a bit better.
Also I don't know if I lost the basket handle fabric (red and yellow basket) or if it wasn't included. But I improvised. I used two of my leftover fabrics and if the points matched up, it would be perfect.
The second basket (yellow and green) is my RP version. The jury is still out on which I'll like best.
I've been hoarding (again? I have serious problems!) these RP fabrics for years and I just may get over them with this quilt.

So here they are for your viewing pleasure.

Tuesday

I did it! I actually sat at my machine and... did some mending.
I know, Boring!
But then I put together two blocks. Did you catch that? Two blocks!
These are for our guild meeting on Thursday. Talk about procrastination. I waited till the week of to get them done.

I also finished up the little bird house block. Next is to go back to last month and make a basket block. If I get time today, it's next on my to-do list.

But first, I need to get ready to go out and do some shopping. Maybe if I'm lucky, I'll miss the crowds.

Good morning! I've missed you all! I'm the one at fault. I don't seem to have my act together. Things in my household are all up in the air, or more realistically, on the floor and in every room.
Good news is, the Daughter is moved in. Bad news, so is must of her stuff. We are all trying to marry two households. I assume (we all know what this makes me) we will be doing this for months to come.

Maximus and PugsLee are getting along, as well as can be expected from an only elderly fur child and a puppy.

I'm hoping with the changes around here, that I'll get back into the swing of things. I haven't touched my machine in weeks. I did do a little appliqué. Just a little.
Right now it's more important to have clean dishes and laundry than it is too find time to sew. But cross your fingers for me. All work and no sewing will make me a "B" to live with.

I received the next BOM package. In it I learned that those little hexies I had made, really were too little. They forgot to include them in the last pack. But I'm going to use those little hexies somewhere. I had a lot of fun making them and they are so cute, it'd be a waste not to use them.
Also here is the newest block I'm working on.

So we come to the end. I hope to see you all later this week. I'm really trying hard to have something to show you. Till then...

Tiny Stitches

Ok, I tried to be here yesterday. Good intentions and everything.
I threw my back out (bad choice of words) on Saturday. My punishment for hoarding gobs and gobs of Christmas decorations. Made the whole process of cleaning the attic that much more difficult. Thank goodness my good boy came home and helped me yesterday. We more or less finished moving and arranging the attic. Today we only have to move that dresser that I've been using as a prop, up stairs. And more good news, my back feels 50 percent better this morning.
I also feel so much better about myself. Fun how cleaning can do that. I now have clean corners everywhere. I really like that feeling!

There will be quite a change around here. With the Daughter and Maximus moving in Maximus is like a real baby. I alway vacuum before he gets here because like a real baby, he will find anything on the floor.
A couple of weeks ago he found one of those sock hangers. Nobody around here has bought any socks in awhile!

This is also going to be a BIG change for poor elderly PugsLee. She is use to being the princess. And Maximus has always left before. Poor girl!

Star Mug Rugs

What a week! I already am exhausted. Why? First I had to finish all those stars.

I made mug rugs for all my faithful Quilt Show workers. And I must have been crazy! These are little paper pieced stars from Judy Mathieson's book Mariner's Compass book. We used a lot of these stars in our Opportunity quilt and I thought it would be a good memento to remember this years QS. After about three, I was ready to re-think that whole plan! But I continued on, complaining to myself. And I finished! Sure I was finishing the binding on 10 or so yesterday morning, the day of our Celebration meeting. Have I mentioned how I procrastinate?
I obviously like this color combo. Years ago I bashed a bunch of tile and made my outdoor table a beautiful compass rose mosaic, not unlike this little mug rug.
First batch of 6.
Second batch of 6.
Last batch of 6. Glad to be done!

One great thing about these mug rugs, all scraps. Not a thing was bought to complete these. That I love! In fact I may not hate these as much as I first thought. I'm think I need a matching set for my own house. Now I just need to do it...

Because we were having a Celebration last night, I thought we needed a special treat. So out came the cake pans and gum paste.

Unfortunately, I have very little patience (another flaw). I gave up trying to make the frosting smooth and just covered it with a ribbon. Yes I could have put fondant on it, but I don't like it. I didn't like working with it or eating it, so why bother. But gum paste, that I like. And it makes such beautiful flowers that you can use to hide ugly bits.

So I'm now done with other things and I hope to get back to my own things. There is no pressing agenda, outside of my own head.

Except the "C" holiday. But I'm kind of still a humbug and I don't want to hear about it, so I'm sticking my head in the sand. Don't tell me!

In other news, my Daughter is coming home, just in time for Thanksgiving! She said for a month or two, but I'm not complaining (yet). The only problem? Two and a half years ago, I moved into her room and my old room, a converted attic, became a storage room. Can you say "Hoarder", yeah apparently that's me too. So I have been going through years of "I'll get to that later" boxes. I have found a lot of baby clothes that I have saved for the kids. Every little outfit brings memories of yesteryear.

So now that I've explained my tardiness, I'll try to do better next week. Bring on the fabric! I need to use up some creativity. You know, use my skills to create and stop wasting it on cleaning. Yea, I like that.

Wrinkled Quilt Top

Don't you hate when your days don't go as planned? I'm sure we all do. And I think you can tell my day didn't go as planned.
I just managed to sew eight seams and complete the Dresden quilt top. This was how I planned to start the day, but...
Maybe after dinner I'll find some time to finish a few more stars, but "some like it hot" is coming on TCM tonight. Sure I've seen it almost a million times, I just love a man in drag! Don't get me started on Dr Frank-n-furter. Tim Curry Is too much!

Old Dresdens

I have finally finished all ten Dresden blocks. I've been carting them around with me for awhile. It feels good to have them ready for the next step. Maybe tomorrow they'll turn into a quilt top. Then again, maybe not.

Also at the top of the picture, you can see the stars I've been working on. I tried making a deal with myself to finish two of those a day and well, that hasn't worked as well as I planned.
I'm easily distracted (velvets).
I've been sketching and dreaming up a quilt to showcase those velvets. This is when I wish I could draw.

I'm learning to embrace the imperfection in each of these blocks. At first they bothered me. Now I think the flaws make them look more antique.
I will start researching an age appropriate quilting for this top. I'm kind of excited about that.

I have another idea in my head and I found the most loveliest of lovely fabrics to use. These fabrics beg to be touched. And when touched they cause drooling. Unfortunately, I can not let you get any closer than you are for fear of drool and germs.
I have myself a little box of jewels. Nice some velvety jewels. All I can say is that I may be creating a dog free quilt. Because we all know about dog drool. This quilt may be off limits to poor PugsLee.
If all goes to plan, I may even use this dupioni silk as a background. I'm going to break all the rules. And I may even use wool in it too. I said I wasn't going to start collecting new fabrics, but I was inspired by another blog (Material Obsession) and there is no looking back. I'm like a woman possessed.

Oh to have more time in the day! I want to do it all.

Thank you all who stopped by to look at my Ghastly project. All your nice comments have gone straight to my head and I feel as big as a house, kind of like Alice in Wonderland. Unfortunately I didn't have enough time to make an extra as agive away for one of you Wonderful readers.

Cherise from Annie's blog won yesterdays give away. But keep it up and go and visit all the other participating blogs for more chances to win.

Several of you had asked where I got the embroidery pattern. I just took a piece of the Ghastly fabric to the window and I copied the haunted house onto a piece of paper. Than I took that paper to the the copier and enlarged it. Next I took some marbled orange fabric in almost the same color and copied the paper to the fabric.

Then I stitched away. For the roof tiles, trees and window panes, I just used my permanent marker to draw them in.

There you have it, easy-peasy.

Hey, did you notice my Ghastly Inn sign? Does it remind you of another ghastly hotel? Perhaps a tower in England? With a tall owner? An incompetent waiter?

Now how about a little retail therapy?

While at the Show, I managed to do a little shopping. I said I needed some cheddar and I got some! A reproduction. It looks a little dark, but I'm happy with it. I saw it used in a quilt and it didn't look so dark so maybe it just looks dark because there is so much of it. How much? I bought two yards. And I plan to buy more cheddars so let me know if you have a favorite, please!

Also in this pile is a few yellows for my Golden Chain tree. That corral color, well just because it was pretty.

Then I went to the antique vendor and found this beautiful tablecloth. I'm going to turn it into another whole cloth quilt. Just layer it and quilt it up.
Last, but not least, were these gorgeous fall plaids. I keep walking by and drooling. I finally stopped and bought them. I feel a little guilty about these because there are no plans for them. But I didn't let that stop me! And they look so beautiful with that cheddar. Like a grilled cheese sandwich, warm and wholesome!
I will try to make this my last post about the Quilt Show. I thought these were important pictures to post. These are the winners of our ballots.

First up we have Phyllis Cullen's "Treetop Pair", that won "Best Art Quilt".
This is my favorite and I was really glad to come back and see a ribbon on it. This is Ester Abshier's " Mariners in a Pickle". This huge quilt won "Best Large Quilt". She said on her information that this was a challenge to finish, but she keep up on it and is now glad she did.
Marilyn Graesser's "Stars for A". This was "Viewers Choice".

Sally Jo Smith Won "Best use of Color" for her "Flower Basket Medallion". Seeing two of these in the Show has maybe encouraged me to finish mine.
And my friend Jozette Rutherford Won the "Best Small Quilt" for her "Mystical Manzanita".
All these winners came as no surprise. No that doesn't mean I rigged the winnings. These were just the quilts I would have picked.

Sally Jo is a genius when it comes to color. Phyllis is one of our best art quilters. Marilyn is a perfect piecer. Jozette is a master appliqué and one of my favorite teachers. And come on, Esther's quilt is Fantastic!

Ghastly Blog Hop

So sorry everyone, here I am, a little late but I made it finally. Here it is, the best thing in blogging this month The Ghastly Blog Hop. I see that several of you are waiting to see my creation. It isn't much but here we go...
A lovely orange quilt for PugsLee and I to cuddle under on cool nights.

When I saw this orange Ghastly print from Quilt Taffy, I knew I had to have it. I just didn't know how much I needed and so I made a miscalculation and I'll now show how I fixed that.
Here you go, an embroidered middle block. Keep that in mind when you run out of fabric. Or just do like some of my friends. If they see a fabric they like, they but three yards and end up with scraps.
I just didn't realize how much was going on in this fabric and didn't know where to cut it to get the full story. But now I know one yard is never enough!

The coven of witches is still my favorite. Maybe because I feel a kindred spirit from them?

And that tree fabric, you can't have enough of that, it's amazing!

SO TIRED

At this moment I get to sit at home, on my couch, and just chi-ax. I can't remember when I've bee so tired! I've been feeling so guilty that all the committees have been doing stuff and all I was doing was arranging meetings and conducting.
I found out how exhausting my job really was this weekend. Straight off the bat let me say, I'm flipping glad the Show is over!
I've learned how important good shoes are, even my toe nails hurt.
I've found that this job meant camera time, some of that I delegated away, like when a camera crew came in. I just about wet my self! Me? Talk on the news! No way! So I found me a couple of flies ( said the spider) and put them to work. Hehehehe

What a day! We had a bunch of people helping to set up the Quilt Show. From our member to Rugby girls.
The build that holds the Show is a "U" shaped,20 thousand square building. It took most of the day, but we have every quilt hung and all the vendors unpacked.
What a day! First thing I did upon arriving home, take a bath and run my feet.
So I'm off to bed, soon.

The mailman has been good to us this week. First I received my win form Barb. I was so surprised! And so happy! I won this beautiful panel.

A couple of years ago I looked all over for this panel. Than I forget, I was probably distracted by Christmas.

So that brings me to a question. I'm going to be needing to invest in some cheddar fabrics. Any suggestions?
Also in the box, Barb sent along these two Halloween patterns, a fall note pad and an Annalee doll. All perfect for the fall season! Thank you Barb!
The second package actually came for my Daughter.
Here she is with her paralegal diploma. She has been working hard on this course, also while working full time in a lawyers office. I am so proud of her! Except this is the reason for her move. I keep my fingers crossed that a local position will make it's way available to her.
And this is her silly Wallace and Gromit smile.

If you are in Chico this weekend, come on by the Quilt Show, held at the fairgrounds. Look for me in my pumpkin spice shoes and say "Hello".

I promise, the show will be worth it.

A Green Finish

Between projects, I managed to complete the top of the green quilt (really need to come up with a better name). I had an idea in my head and again it seems to work. Here is is with two new sides.
One thing that will not work, leaves on the tree. What was I thinking? Does this quilt really need more green?! So now the new idea is a flowering tree, like a golden chain tree. I think that's what I mean. My MIL has one, a yellow flowering tree that looks like a weeping willow.

So that's the new plan, add more color in the form of a flowering tree. What do you think? Any tree suggests?

Oh and look at my great weekend find. Wonder Woman headphone to go with my skinned Ipod. Not that I'll use them, ear buds hurt my ears, but cool none the less. Ok, maybe just to me...
And I wanted to share with you this seasons hottest shoes (is it even cool to say hot?) and again this may only be me. Pumpkin spice Converse, that's the name I call them, much better than their name, rust. These will be my October to November fashion statement.
This weekend is our Quilt Show. I needed a comfy pair of shoes for the days of work ahead. I've been told I won't get to sit to often. I may be sneaking into the bathroom just to sit down! Also these shoes will help identify me. I'll be found easier with a flashy pair hooves.

Upon returning home with a few bags of goodies, this is the look I received from PugsLee.
Can you see the excitement in her eyes? This was a "is there any leftovers for me" look.
No... poor girl, she had to resort to chewing her lip.

Actually, there were fries in a pocket and she knew it, so don't call animal protective services on me. She received a treat and we all went to bed happy.

More Wings

I thought that the right side of the quilt was a little sparse, so I added a new friend. Dragonflies are one of my favorite things and I haven't put one on a quilt is quite a while. There was a time when every quilt had a bug. Another favorite is a spider and a web, but I don't think that would be appropriate on this quilt. But a damselfly is perfect, in my opinion.
Darn the light! I can't seem to get a good picture of the colors. Before the block was added to the rest of the quilt.

I then took the quilt outside and laid it on the car, where there was still a bit of sun overhead. Still not a true representation of the colors.
All day I've been thinking of another element to this quilt. Tomorrow I will try to see if it's something that will work.
So far these batiks have been working well together. Surprisingly after being in a basket for years there was very few wrinkles and no fraying. Don't you just love batiks!

I stopped for the day because I just started to fight the blocks. Right around the damselfly, the blocks are not matching up. I guess that's good if I only just now came to a problem. So a little work and measuring is going to be required before I go on.

After a (hopefully) good nights sleep, I'll dive in and try to complete the top, tomorrow.

Happy Things

So far so good. I haven't achieved too much, but I'm happy with the look, so far. Now hopefully as it grows I don't ruin it. Still a lot of greens. Unfortunately the greens just do not show their true colors on the camera. Just so you know, the light greens are a celadon color that I adore. Then they just go crazy from there. All greens are included, from lime to forest.
I am partial to green. I always give Thanks for the color green. There are more colors of green in nature then I can count. Even my green stash is larger than any other color in my stash.

I'm in constant amazement at what I see in nature.

Just this afternoon, there was a spot of sun shining down on a lovely fern in the fairy garden. I ran back inside for the camera to try to catch it. Just look at this lovely fern getting a sun tan, soaking up the sun, letting it dry the rain. How lush and happy it looks.

One thing I can't live without, the color green. It makes me happy!

What else makes me happy? The smell of fall. What is the smell of fall? Apples, spices, yeast, fireplaces and even mud. But specially spices. Cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, allspice and ginger. Mix in leftover apples and cook for 10 plus hours, equal apple butter. YUM!
I may have finally duplicated my Grandmother's recipe. Over the years I lived with her, I finished all the apple butter she had in her basement. I loved the stuff! To my utter dismay, she didn't make me a lifetime supply! And unfortunately she didn't leave a recipe. I suffered through years of store bought apple butter. Very disappointing. Not spicy enough! Than I found a replacement at our local orchard, but it became a challenge! I had to reproduce my Grandmother's recipe. Now I think I've done it, or at least a close second. But I'm happy with it and happy with myself for completing the challenge. My Grandmother live on in these little jars, with each bite.

Now back to the greens...

Green Day 2

Those green fabric have now turned into green block strips. I've spent as much time as I could this weekend, cutting, sewing and cutting again. I now have lots and lots of strips. Next I need to add these to the blocks and turn those blocks into a quilt top.
I also worked on another block to add to Flora's quilt. Because I'm just making it up as I go, this may take longer.

There are now a small colony of koi who live in Flora's pond.
I'm super happy with the koi. They still need work, but I'm thinking that up as I go too. I figured when I get to the quilting part, I'll add scales with metallic thread. And bubbles. I must have bubbles.

It's not your imagination, their tail fins are 3-dimensional. I don't know what they fabric is, but it feels a bit like a cotton but with lots of shimmer.

I feel a bit proud of myself. I put this quilt away because of the koi. I had the picture in my mind and I couldn't draw a koi, or thought I couldn't. I siced myself out and keep Flora in the UFO basket for about three years.

Then this weekend I sat down and just did it. Really not too hard. (Just don't tell me they aren't proportional or something)
So someday soon, I hope to turn these blocks into a very green quilt. Fun how the mind come up with things or how we under estimate ourselves. But who knows, this could be the ugliest quilt ever. I mean it, look at all those greens, what was I thinking?

My goal this year (yes I know this is October) is to finish as many of those UFOs as possible. When I made the UFO list last year, there were 20 UFOs to finish. I am now on my tenth. So I'm a little behind, but while the juice is still flowing, I'll continue to finish as many as I can. And sure I've added at least 6 more to the basket, I'm just more motivated at this moment. Maybe it's the cooler weather? Whatever it is, I'm going with it and I wish you all the same.

Green Day

I'm working with a bunch of collected greens today. These have been in a bag for a special project for too long. When done, this will be a very green quilt.
I'm cutting them into strips of various sizes, to then sewn into more strips and then cut into cubes.

Flora needs to be put together instead of hanging on the wall. She is making me chilly just looking at her. Right now in Paradise, the weather is a chilly 52 degrees. But I'm all warm and cozy by the fire. Flora is not. I think I can see goose pimples on her back. And her bottom is looking a little rosy. That lily pad is not doing any good at warming her bottom.
I don't know if this frog is friend or foe, but he's cold blooded too so Flora will get no comfort from him.
Maybe this will become a quilt in the near future, as I figure out how to manage my time correctly. Living in the UFO basket is a cruel life. So wish me luck.

I have to make 17 paper pieced stars and I'm try to break that up with something fun. I have some time to complete the stars, so I thought if I make two stars a day, I'll be good.

Then work on Flora for a while.

Then work on some patterns.

This is just not the way I'm used to working. I would just keep on one project till I burned out. Was is because I'm too lazy to change my thread in the machine? Do I only have a one-track mind?

Whatever it is, I'm going to try a new way and hope to accomplish more and hopefully less burn-out equals less UFOs.

Useless Trivia

Imagine my surprise to find that I was awarded ...
As I was eating my breakfast, fueling up for the day. I had opened my email from Sandie from Crazy'boutquilts and she picked me to tell 7 unknown things about myself.

Do you really want to her me rant? I could go on for days!

(Daily breakfast of a toasted bagel topped with homemade pumpkin butter. Yes, it's a bagel without a belly button)
Ok, here it goes.

1. By the time I was 13, I had already traveled through 16 states. Ending in Arkansas, where we lived for about a year. My bio-mom was a flighty person when younger.

2. When I came to live with my Grandmother, we traveled some more, to Canada. We spent three months traveling my Grandmother's roots and re-kindling with cousins.

We spent so much time in Canada, that I picked up a few French words for everyday things. Silly words, like "serviette", "petit" and my personal favorite "Merde!" (not so PG)

3. Back in 1999, our family lived in Sydney Australia for about a year. Hubby was working at the new Star City casino at the time and his wonderful boss flew me and my kiddies out to be with him. This was a wonderful experience and the kids were just old enough to make some amazing memories while there.
4. I'm a bit clumsy (as you might have guessed). There were a couple of years that I was in and out of the ER for a fall.

Learned that walking a barrel requires attention to your surroundings.

I have scars to show my mistakes. A broken nose for running into a wall. But that was all. I did end up with a few stitches, but this is a PG blog, so use your imagination. Just know, I wasn't clumsy that time!

5. I wore a back brace for about three years, four less then was thought necessary. No not because I'm clumsy. I was diagnosed with scoliosis and lordosis. I was told that I would probably need to wear that brace till I was 18. It was Christmas, three years later , when the DR told me I was as good as new and I was free from living in that braces 24 hours a day. What a great gift that was!

6. As a punishment my bio-mom made me read a novel. Well that back fired on her! Now she complains that I read too much. Huh? Too much, no such thing.

7. For years I've entertained the idea of writing my own novel. I've started so many stories, but never have finished one. I have list of characters. Sometimes when I see something fun, I write it down to be used in a book. I also write down many of a certain cousin's conversations, because she has no idea how amusing she can be, in the right context.

I really do mean it when I say, I'll put you in my novel!

This was one of the reasons I started this blog. Practice, for that some day novel.

Apple Weekend

I was an apple-y weekend. That basket of apples is slowly reducing.

We started the weekend with chicken,cabbage and applesauce.

Followed by an apple waffle breakfast, complete with apple syrup.
Then we ended the day with an apple cake.
Not too pretty, but we didn't let that stop us!
Even what we cleaned out of the pan was a yummy moist morsel.

I may be appled out at this moment, but I still have half a basket. I see more applesauce in the future. Maybe even some apple butter.

I may be taking time off this month, for the Quilt Show. I also have some really work to do, so I may be showing up at night. I going to try and see now far I can push my creativity.

Fall Harvest

What does fall mean to you? Cooler weather? Sweaters? Halloween? Fall fruit?

All these things are what I think of as fall approaches.

In my neck of the woods, we also have a celebration commemorating Fall, Johnny Appleseed Day. This is the oldest harvest celebration in the state. We started this apple festival back in 1888. There is some speculation about Johnny Appleseed even getting this far west, but us hicks will celebrate anything and this weekend it's going to be all about apples.

I've already started with my own 1/2 bushel of Gala's. I went to a local family farm who have been growing apples for the past 9o years in Paradise. These days they've even started growing peaches in all varieties. And for more trivia, Paradise is the last area to produce peaches in the year. So if you still need a taste of peach in your mouth, come on up to Paradise.
I figured with my half bushel, I'd make apple pancakes, applesauce, apple pie, apple cake, apple crisp, baked apples, eat a few naked apples and maybe even cover a few in caramel.

You thought my half bushel looks like a lot, check this out.
This box holds 18 boxes of 100 apples each. So all together this big box can make over a 1000 apple pies. Pretty impressive!

Not only do they look pretty, you should smell them. There was a scent of apples in the air that was better than any candle you can buy.

So where ever you are, I'd like to be the first to say, "Happy Johnny Appleseed Day". Have a great weekend and eat an apple or two to celebrate.

Button Hoarding

Grandmother's hoarding has saved me again. If it wasn't for this jar of buttons, I wouldn't have finish the stack of pumpkins. Thank you Grandma!
I have 10 of these jars, it all colors. I don't think I'll ever buy another button in my life. I've added the few I had to Grandmother's stash and I've haven't made a dent in the 5 years I've had them. Guess I'll have to try harder.

Here is the finished quilt. Not too big. around 34 x 40. But I think this would look even cuter scaled down to a long skinny wall hanging.
Warning! When ironing, don't reach around the it!
This is my right forearm. It's a funny angle because I took the picture myself (badly). It's only now starting to bother me. It was days ago, but now it burns to touch water or anything else. And because it's at my waist, I seem to rub it on everything!

So the moral of this story, don't be a dummy!

You all know how much I love flying geese. You are probably tired of seeing them, but I'm not, so bear with me.
Don't you just love scraps! If it wasn't for my scrap boxes, I'd have really boring geese. These were all made with scraps, some more scrappy than others. Love it!

Also do you see the buttons? Aren't they too cute! I found as many tiny buttons as I could and I still have leftovers. They are all kinds. some more maroon, some shiny, an orange one and even a baby button.
I'm not too happy with the sign, so I may rework it. I like the look, but the size isn't right. But it needs to stay, to identify these gorgeous fruits.

If Hubby was a prankster, I wouldn't be surprised to wake up and find the sign changed to Granny Panties. Thank Goodness he knows better than to cut into my fabrics!

Cakes!

We all have an official Wilton "Certificate of Completion", Hurray! I guess we should frame it and open a store.

This last class was to roll all that we learned into a cake, a professional cake, one that someone would pay for.

I learned a lot in this class. One being, I probably wont ever cover a cake in fondant again!

Some of us did quite well. Other's failed (me). I had too big an idea and not enough skill.

So let cut the cake and have a slide show!

This is Bridgette's cake. She spent at least two hours Sunday cutting out her roses. She wanted 13. About halfway through, she wanted to know who came up with that idea.
When she finished covering the cake, she thought it looked like a hat. A bowler perhaps?

This was from the only other student in class. We started out with the 8 of us and finished with 4. Hhhhmmm, I think they were intimidated by the fondant and that's why they didn't show up.

Anyway, this is from the same student who had dyed her hands pink that first day. She did the same thing again last night. She real likes pink fondant!
And now to the fail. Apparently, cakes with edges are harder to cover with fondant. There is more difficulty in easing out the ripples on corners. I had two corners that ripped and ruffled and there was nothing I could do to fix it. Lesson learned.

Lesson two, add more black then you think is possible to keep black flowers. My are slightly blueish. Another lesson learned.
But I don't think my flowers and bow are too bad. And that was why I took the class in the beginning. I wanted to make flowers. I think I can add these fancy flowers to a regular frosted cakes and still get the same wow factor, and I could even do it with corners, just not fondant!
I did my lid before class, to set up. At class I couldn't put the wood grain in the cake while it was all soft. I almost went through the fondant, so I gave up.

And I know that my skeleton it not to scale, but you get the idea.

Maybe next time I'll have more time and skill, I'll cut the cake out and I'll lay the skeleton on a quilted bed. Next time I'll prop the lid. Next time...

Gail did an excellent job with her flowers. She's had practice making the gum paste flowers. She bought a fancy, fancy new set and made these wonderful fall flowers.

The colors are spot on!
Gail made more, but she didn't use them. Don't you love these roses?! Don't tell her, but I stuck one in my pocket. Ssshhhh
All in all, I think we all had a fun time and we learned a lot. Just don't ask me to make you a fancy cake! But I think Gail is going to add "Cake Decorator" to her name tag, so call her.

The Sign Says it All

Now there's no excuse for these pumpkins to be mistaken. Just you wait till these pumpkins have some grooves quilted into them!

Yesterday I colored so much fondant, that I have sore wrists. Tonight is our final class and I'm so ready! My cake is in the freezer. My black roses are dried. I've made more leaves than either my Daughter or I can use.

I'm almost excited about it. Hopefully it'll turn out.

Tomorrow I'll have pictures of all the cakes. It'll be exciting!

Slacker Weekend

This was a busy weekend. Not too busy on the quilting front, but a busy one. Friday night I managed to get a little farther into the "GP" quilt. They no longer look like granny panties, right? You can see that they are a stack of pumpkins, hopefully. Sometimes when I draw things, they don't always look like what they were suppose to be. Just know, these are pumpkins.
I've added leaves and vines and when I'm finished quilting, I'll add some button berries to the vines.

Saturday, my BFF's parents were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. I found a vintage hanky in my linen stash. This one was meant to be, because it had a "R" already embroidered on it. Why did I buy it? No reason, I just collect initials, they can come in handy in times like this.
So I sketched out an oval, drew in a few numbers. Quilted it up ( just before the party, because I'm a slacker) and voile, an heirloom gift that you know nobody else will be bringing.

I forgot to take a picture when I finished. I was in such a hurry to get to the party in time that I had to take a picture at the party. Hopefully I've learned my lesson and will stop being a slacker.

So with that thought, I'm going to leave you now and go attack the pile of laundry that I've put off till I'M wearing the granny panties!

I'm so happy with myself! I sat down at the machine and I actually finished my toile quilt! I really haven't touch it in over a week, except to pull out bad stitches.

I was finally inspired to do something. You see, I had finished the border with feathers and an echo and I just didn't like the way one part of the quilt looked. So I took it out and then I didn't know what to do. There is sat, for days. I would feel guilty about not finishing it, but I wasn't sure what to do with it. Then I started making those granny panties and I think my mind answered the question all by it's self.

I sat down in the morning and I just started quilting and I didn't get up till I had finished all of if. Hurray! Now I don't feel guilty about anything, except eating a hand full of mini cupcakes!
PugsLee is helping hold down the quilt while I take pictures. She thinks it's going to take off with a slight breeze. Ain't she cute? She is also listening real hard to what I'm saying, "Get off the quilt sweetie. Ok, move your rump. Moved it pumpkin head!"

Nope she didn't seem to understand. Just cocked her head from side to side. Silly dog!
See that triangle space at the top of the picture? That was where I had my problems. Too fat feathers and bad stitches. Now the feathers look related and thin.

This is the back side of my quilt. It shows the quilting better and I want some surprise at the Quilt Show. So I'm sorry you will have to wait till then to see the front.

Granny Panties

I have been working on some sewing, not very much, but some. I told you I started something new and I did, shame on me. I still haven't finished the quilting on my Toile quilt which is going into the Show. I'm having a serious problem with procrastination, seriously!

So I started something new, something I sketched out. I gathered up some fabrics and I got to work hopefully to revive my quilting spirit.

Halfway through the project, Hubby comes in and says, "Why are you making lady butts?"

Really!? Does he think I'm sitting around sewing granny panties in my free time? Silly man!

Now I know you all know what these are, right? You all know better than to think I spend my day stitching up a pair of panties.

But ... I can kind of see what he sees ... that's terrible, I do see it!

Tis the Season

I think the fall season has officially arrived. The weather is cooler (for some), it's mid September, some leaves are falling (somewhere) and there are pumpkins growing. So I officially announce it's time for pumpkin cooking!
We should all start the day off with a mini pumpkin cupcake. After a day of hard work and a long Quilt Show meeting, we should end the day with a mini pumpkin cupcake. Do you see a pattern here? I just need any excuse to eat pumpkin cupcakes.

Last night I conducted a Quilt Show meeting. We have only a month and a day till our fabulous show. All my ladies have worked so hard and (knock on wood) everything is going as planned.

If you are going to be in the Chico area October 22 or 23, come by the fair grounds for a fabulous show. We have about 240 quilts to share, 17 vendors and this year we are even going to be selling Holiday quilts. Mark your calendars and if you do come by, make sure to find me and say "Hello".
I do try to treat my ladies well. I figure it I feed them goodies, they'll behave. Would you for a pumpkin cupcake?

As you can see, I made quite a few! This morning I still have more then half leftover. Good thing I have another meeting tonight. This time I get to sew with my small group. I know I can off load a few cupcakes there!

I never did show you what we did in our last fondant class.
We made Calla Lilies.
Carnations (the pink one)
And Roses. I think we all decided the the carnations are too time consuming. The roses we think we need more practice. The calla lilies are the easiest and very fun to do.

Last night I missed the fondant class. But they were all going to cover their cake boards with fondant, so I don't think I missed much. Gail and my Daughter can catch me up by next week when we have our final class. At that class we all need to bring a baked cake and decorate it with flowers. I am going to try a Halloween cake. Are you surprised? If you were, you don't know me very well!

Till tomorrow. I have some quilty things to show you. But I'm making you wait, because that's part of my nature too! Today I was just sweeting you up. So, till tomorrow.

Last weekend, while shopping in my favorite Halloween store, I found the perfect set of plates. They even match my soup tureens and most of the other dishes. They may not be for every one, which is fine, because now their mine! (there I go rhyming again! It must be a curse, or something worse!) The best part is, they were cheap. I swear, every year we find the best Halloween stuff at Ross. They are now my go-to Halloween party store.

I guess this means I'm having a Halloween party. I do this every year, never sure if I'm having a party, then I found something and my mind gets changed. But the party is now on!
We even found a few crystal skulls. Some were goblets and are as big as the plates, not sure what their function is.

But look how well the play together! It was meant to be.

Funny thing was, I found one of each skull while shopping in Sacramento. Cousin Linda and I went into the Ross next to Ikea and I found them. Hubby liked skulls and keeps them on display all year. When this special season starts, I raid his office and "borrow" a bunch of cool stuff.

Last week Hubby and I went into our local Ross and found 3 of each skull. It was like they spilt them up and we found them and made them into a family again. Aaahhh! It's that serendipity?

Maybe today I actually get some quilting done. I have been seriously slacking. I remove some bad stitches and than do nothing. I'm a bad girl! Our Quilt Show is a month away and I really only have until the 6th to have my quilts done and what am I doing? Slacking!

I also started something new. I know, bad girl! I really must have ADD or something! No I'm procrastinating and whining. So to get back to work!

Monday Babels

Have you all missed me? Did you think I went on vacation? Well I kind of did. My services were needed at a local elephant orphanage. Then I ran a 105 mile marathon. After that I flew off in my invisible plane and lassoed the moon.

Do you believe any of that?

In reality, I was in a web of thread created by loose tension. I had so much un-sewing to do, I got caught up. But I'm back now and you may be sorry I've returned.

This weekend I was an actual bag lady. I had myself a Kmart bag and I was walking up and down my busy rural street. Why? I was needing some caps. These kind.

Don't tell me that you don't collect extra caps! What are you going to do when you need them! Cause I ain't sharing!

What am I going to do with them? Make acorns of course!

First step is to dress in as many frumpy layers as possible, don't forget the trash bag rain coat. Now walk up and down the street with your body bent in half and pick up as any acorn caps as possible. If you see some else on YOUR street doing the same thing, make sure you make a very public scene. Yell and say a bunch of nonsense words while propelling your arms at them.
Next come home and change. Make sure you wash your hands!

Then go to your trusty craft closet and find your Fimo or any polymer clay.
Now comes the fun part. Roll that clay into forever acorns.
After the clay has been cooked, find a cap for each acorn. Aren't they cute? Say yes...
Now find a decorative bowl or plate and display them proudly. Just don't let any squirrels into your house. I'm sure these acorn would be hazardous to their health.

So go out and make a few forever acorns. I'm going to try to varnish or oil the caps at some point. If you get to this first or have a better idea let me know.

Now I'm back to that web of thread. I promise to be back tomorrow with more babel. So insert the fish and come back.

Weekend Fabrics

Last week I recieved another package. Inside was some scary stuff. More Ghastlies! I love the orange color. This is what Halloween should look like. Orange and black! Who thought pink and black were Halloween colors?
I already started on my Ghastlie project (to be revealed in October). I am loving it! It's going to look great at Halloween. Maybe not as good as the Raven, but definitely a second.

I also worked on my quilt for the Quilt Show coming up. That is if ripping is considered work. I had two kinds of feathers and they looked bad together, so one kind had to go. Now to come up with another quilting design.

Looks like we might have some rain today. After temperatures around a 100, some rain may not be bad. Now it's starting to feel like fall!

As the Bow Turns

I've started a new hobby. Cake decorating. My Daughter and I were in Michael's, the craft store, and they were doing a demo on fondant flowers. Both of us were impressed and than came the sales pitch. Half off all classes in the month of September. Well that was a no brainer!

In our first class, we learned to make bows. Big giant, cover you messy cake bows. It wasn't too bad. We learned a few things. One being that it's not all fondant, it's a half and half mix with gum paste. Helps it dry faster, but not too fast.

These bows are the teacher's. Notice that hers are perfect. Every loop in the right place. Just wait till you see mine.

This is the one the teacher made to demonstrate. The paper you will see is to keep the loops from falling down. The fondant is heavy and it collapses on it's self after a while. How do I know? Because I didn't stuff all my loops and by the time I got home, it was a bow that looked like it had been sat on. I need to learn to listen to the teacher!

This lady made a beautiful color peach. I love this color, it's perfect.

This is Gail's bow. It's hard to see but her fondant was marbled a purple and a maroon. Very pretty. She also used the teachers rolling pin.
And these are my and the Daughter's. Anyone who knows my Daughter would instantly know which one is hers. She is a purple lover and has been all her life.

Mine is the one that looks like it was made with "Extra" gum. Notice the flat look. I've learned my lesson and I think the next bow would be much better.

I had fun and especially with my Daughter. It's been a long time since we have done anything like this together and I don't know how many more times we will have.

At dinner that night, she informed me that she wants to move to San Luis Obispo next year.

Great way to chock me and age me in an instant! It was bad enough when she moved out of the family home and moved 30 minutes away. Now she wants to 6 hours and 37 minutes away! What's a Mom to do!? She's breaking my heart... I just hope that she doesn't find a job there. Any advice on losing your kids is greatly appreciated.

Owl 3

I promise not to bored you with any more owls. This is the last time, for a while, I promise!

This one is on a buttery yellow background and has more branches, because I put the owls down too low. But I meant to do it, so all is good!

Sorry I took the pictures outside and the sun is leave spots on the quilt.
I also decided that a patchwork border was too busy and I went with a simple stripe. Aaahhh, so much better.
I also added tummies to these owls. Easy Peasy. I started out with a fold piece of paper and cut out an owl shape. Just like a heart, but owl shaped. There are no rules, just do what you like. Next you just add a branch or two and you're done. See, easy-peasy!
And again with that backing fabric. I have one yard left of this and one special quilt to make out of it, but I have time yet. I was just practicing.

I did take an owl quilt to a local boutique and I saw that another local company (Woof n Poof) has come out with a bunch of owls too. So the Daughter was right, owl are the new thing.

Owl 2

Shade your eyes! This one is a bright one! It is so colorful, I was having seizures. Kidding!

But it is bright. That hot pink owl is so bright, she glows at night. That fabric has been in my scrap box Forever! It's one that I'd like to use up. If you look in the border, you'll see I used it as often as I could. Unfortunately, I still have more.
Every quilt is a little different and each has their own personalities. This is what you get when someone else picks your fabrics! My Daughter took the idea of the spotted owls and totally ran with it. She wanted to use dots for every thing. I had to spot her from using up my precious dots!
And again, I used the owl fabric for the backing. I will have 1 yard left after I finish up the third one.
This little guy is going to keep the kidos up, it's so bright!

I'm a little disappointed in myself for not getting these guys done over the weekend. Such a bacon eating slacker!

Have you noticed the button at the top of my page? The Ghastlies are coming! I'm so excited and a little stressed because I need to make something out of my fabric before the blog hop starts. Too many projects and not enough time!

Bacon Day

Did you know that Saturday was International Bacon day? How did you celebrate?

We went downtown and were looking for the wonderful bacon treats that were to be had on this glorious day. And we were totally disappointed! We seemed to be the only one who know what day it was. So disappointed!

Sooooo, I decided that we really missed out and I needed to make it up to the family. And I did! We started the day with hash browns, eggs and candied bacon.

Than it was lunch. Bring on the bacon burgers! And end the day with yummy maple-bacon cupcakes. Perfect way to end the day, trust me, perfect.
Want to make your own?

Cream together:

5 TBS soft butter

3/4 cup sugar

next add:

3/4 maple syrup

1 egg

then alternate:

2 2/3 all purpose flour

1 1/2 buttermilk (make your own by added 1 TBS of vinegar to the milk)

1 ts vanilla

3/4 ts salt

1 1/2 baking powder

1/2 baking soda

1/2 ts cinnamon

Bake at 325 for 25 - 30 minutes. Makes 24 cupcakes

Maple frosting

6 TBS soft butter

3 cups powdered sugar

1/4 cup maple syrup

Mix till smooth (you may need to add more syrup. I forgot to keep track of how much I actually put in).

Sprinkle with chopped candied bacon. Perfection!

The Bees Knees

Well... I didn't do anything yesterday. I was having one of those grumpy days. I was fine, till I had some milk. Oh the life of a lactose intolerant tummy! Because my tummy didn't like the milk (lactose free), it gave me a tummy ache and than just made me grumpy! So I sat and read and grumped. Poor PugsLee got the worse of it. Poor girl, I've since apologize to her, several times. She still loves me, thank goodness!

So because I was a grumpy slacker, I have nothing quilty, but I can still try to entertain you.

A couple weeks back, I meet my new nephew Cameron. Is there anything cuter than baby feet?!

Speaking of knees...

I have a picture of the bees knees.
Ok, so maybe it's just a healed branch, but it looks like a bee knee.

It could be the bee (right side, next to the fresh blooms) in this picture. As you can see, I actually did get some foxgloves to grow. I almost didn't, but the next generation came up and bloomed. This makes me Happy!
Today I'm going to surround myself with happy things. No more grumpies and no more milk!

I can't promise that I'll get any quilting done but I'll be happy anyway.

Tonight is Guild night and I have a pile of things to remember to bring and so many errands, I doubt I'll be sitting much today.

So I'm off till tomorrow.

Who 1

Owl quilt 1 is done. I have two more ready to go. I'm hoping that by the end of the week I'll have them done also.

They are quick because they are raw edge applique. I use "Misty Fuse" to adhere my shapes, iron, then stitch around them. I'm not too fond of raw edge, but I'm in a hurry. Those other ideas are getting closer to the surface and I want to start them now, but I know I should finish the owl first. So I treat them as a chore and finish them first, while dreaming of the fun stuff.

I really like this green! I feel like buying the whole bolt!
I quilted it in a "Rainbow" thread form Superior. It has a shine to it that I really liked against this green. But it doesn't show up in the pictures, so you'll just have to take my word for it.
If I'm not doing feathers, I'm doing swirls. I love swirls, they are sew easy. No thinking involved. Just start swirling.

Everyday before I start with these baby quilts, I work on my toile quilt. I'm mostly doing feathers and this is a nice relaxing end to the day. Really, swirls are relaxing.

I'm seeing spots

What is this pile, besides a mess? The beginnings of several owls.
My Daughter raided my stash and even the scrap boxes to find every piece of dotted fabric I've ever had. We had quite a mess! Then we had two little dogs helping with that mess! It took me most of Monday morning to right my shelves again. But like I said before, Priceless.
This is the first spotted owl to come from that pile. I need to add leaves to the tree and a border, before I can sandwich it.

I've fallen in love with this green! I'm going to go get me some more, so don't be surprised to see it again. I'm thinking this color is perfect for boy or girl. There are more kids quilts brewing under the surface and I want to be prepared when they come to a head.

Thank you all for the wonderful response to "The Raven". I'm glad you loved him as much as I do. But I'm just as surprised as you. I can't plan every detail on paper. I'm always surprised at the end. Even in school, I'd write an outline and then end up changing the outline to fit the report. The same thing happens with my quilts. But just so you know "I meant to do that!"

"Nevermore"

Drum rolls..................... Introducing "The Raven"

I haven't been so excited since I first started my blog (coming up on two years in October).

Over the weekend I finished "David" the raven. BFF and I are jokingly calling the raven after her husband. But don't worry, she's educating him in the works of Poe. Nevermore will he mistake a cue like, "tap, tap, tapping at my door".
As you can see, I did quilt some of the poem into the background. I love it! ... but, if I were to do it again, I'd quilt the words first than put the raven in.
I think he looks quite sinister in this picture. That eye is doing it's best to make you feel uncomfortable.
I started to add a plain black binding to the quilt, when in walked Hubby and he said "what about red?" Wow! What a difference and boy did he hit the nail on the head. Perfect!
I also added another line of tiny piping next to the binding. I think it looks smashing!
It's it funny where your inspiration comes from? Remember this was just a thought in my head after doing the cute little challenge quilt. I have to say, this one is my favorite! I love the macabre look. It'll be perfect at Halloween, the best holiday of the year!

Now I'm off on another winged project. Several in fact. I'm mass producing some owl baby quilts. I even had help from my Daughter. It will be a joint effort. She picked the fabrics and I'll do the sewing. Works for me! She showed an interest and there is nothing better that spending time with your kids, no matter how old they get. I just hope they'll always want to spend time with us.

Tap Taping

Half complete and ready to show himself, introducing "The Raven".

Don't be scared, because all he'll do is utter "Nevermore".
I have re-worked his legs so much, that the fabric behind him is full of holes and looking weak. So I'm just going to be happy with them as they are. Oh why, Oh why did I do something I can't draw!? So don't look at them too close! They seem too small for his body, but I'm ready to give up and move on. I don't want this in my UFO basket!

Imagine coming across this in the dark! That eye is evil! And that raven beak looks sharp.

I did not harm any birds in the making of this wall hanging. Believe it or not, but I bought these feathers to use on a Christmas stocking. I kid you not! I bought them because of that beautiful green glow they get when they are in the right light.

I had just enough leftovers to give the raven a wing and tail. Sinister? Macabre?... Good!
To finish him off I added a tiny piping with some red. Just enough to accent his eye.
Later today I'm going to get him sandwiched and I hope to start the quilting. I am going to try to quilt part of the poem into the background. You know, the poem about Lenore. Can you believe that some people have never heard of the raven , "Tapping, as of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door". My BFF's Hubby didn't and we are never going to let him live it down! Maybe when I'm done with this quilt, I'll gift it to him and make him promise to hang it up in his room. Hehehhehee, My BFF will love me for this!
So there it is. Was it worth waiting for? Probably not, but if you complain or tell me you don't know one of our own famous American poems, I'll have to gift it to you! So no complaining!

Weekend Project Two and Three

Fellow blogger Lynn has been tempting me with her wonderful quilts for a while. If I lived closer to her, I'd be taking classes from her and raiding her stash. But a 3 1/2 hour drive isn't my idea of fun. I'd be too tired to sew by the time I got there!

So when she said she was making one of her quilt patterns into a block of the month, I knew I had to sign up. And I did.

Here is the very first block of Lynn's pattern. You should really go look at hers because I've mangled my own. I have to tell you, those are tiny flowers and leaves!
I made my flag a little differently than hers, because after those flower (which are so not where they are suppose to be!) There was no way I was going to attempt Lynn's flag. I just ain't that good.

But because I had fun, I decided to make another block using some of my treasured Robyn Pandolph fabrics. Because why am I saving them?

So here is the same block, my way.
I made these flowers in one piece and embroidered a middle. They started out looking like lemons till I added the pink. I also embroidered the mail box clasp and changed up the whole flag. I just embroidered a vine around the post and omitted the flag.
Side by side. I'm really glad these blocks will never see their parents. If there was a side by side with the original, the world would cease as we know it.

I can't wait to get my next block, even though I had trouble with the (*#@!) flowers and leaves. This will make a beautiful quilt (in my dreams) some day.

Oh Lynn, you are the master and I am but your clumsy, inept student!

Back to work... yes on the raven! He is becoming a thorn in my side. He is not cooperating! I've had to rework his feet twice and he is still without them. It's driving me crazy! But on I must go.

Weekend Project Won

I did it. I started something new, even with the raven staring me down. But I Had to!

Remember that birthday party my LQS was having? Well they tempted me. It's all their fault!
What do you get from a bunch of orange fabrics and a pattern?
The beginnings of a beautiful family heirloom.
Step one was appliquéing all those lovelies down and adding a few curly-Q-s (because I didn't like the original pattern. Even the leaves were weird, so I drew my own)
Step two was quilting all the lovelies together with 2 layers of batting and adding more curly-Q-s to the background.
Step three was adding piping and a envelope back. Beautiful, don't ya think?!

Hardest part? Stuffing that darn body pillow into the cavity!

I'm very pleased with my new pillow and I'm leaving it out on the window seat till Christmas!

It may have inspired more creativity, but I'm really going to finish that raven. He really is giving me the evil eye. Probably because he can. He just can't sit yet and he's mad. But today feels like the day, as long as he doesn't bite me.

A girls work is never done!

Faux Mercury Glass

A couple of weeks ago, I made the mistake of going into Pottery Barn. While there I fell in love with their mercury glass. Before this trip I hadn't even had an opinion on mercury glass. Now I love it and want more, but there's a problem, the price. This little votive was $3.99. So I came up with an idea... make my own.So I started with something plain. I bought some silver leaf and adhesive and just dove in.
Made my own votive that only cost me a dollar and a half. There is a slight difference in the color. The real mercury glass is on the left and my faux votive on the right.
But alone they look great. Or maybe I just think so. Not even Hubby likes them. He thinks it looks like cheap dollar store glass. Oh well, I like the look and I think it'll look beautiful at Christmas or Halloween. ( yes, there are a few Halloween decorations up at my house)
I've been working all weekend on 4 different appliqués. I caved and started a pumpkin pillow and put the raven on the back burner. I'm going to finish up something today! That's my promise to myself. So cross your fingers for me.

Now back to work!

Tap Tap

Through the fog emerges an ominous figure, the raven, crowing "Never more".

Can you see the way he shimmers? I appliqued him out of a shiny upholstery fabric. This was the inside of a faux suede, but I liked the shimmer.
He is still in the first stages. I want to add more to him, like feet. I also have more ideas, but I want to surprise you or scare you.

I tried to take a few close ups of the branches and I failed...

Both of these pictures are blurry, but you can see that I have embroidered the skinniest branches. I just found a matching thread and butted them right up to the appliqued branches.
One of the hardest things I've discovered with this quilt and the challenge quilt, is that it's hard to not sew in a straight line. I thought the branches would look better all gnarly. But it's a challenge to get them this way.

I bought another Halloween inspired pattern yesterday and from my LQS. I am super excited about starting this one, but I need to focus on the raven.

Yesterday I was also worked on two other applique projects, so maybe I can add a three to the mix. I need to be ready, before Witchy Poo shows up and rearranges my life style!

More Cuteness

I had a couple of left over basket blocks and I didn't want them to go to waste, so I thought I'd whip up a little cuteness. How's this for leftovers?

I had just enough fabric for the sashing, background and border. I literally have just inches left!
Last night our small group meet and the girls were all working on something new.

Alicia just finished this quilt for her granddaughter. How cute is this?
Sue and Alicia were doing a ric-rack test. Any girl would love this quilt!
Judy was working on a scarf. She says this is all the yarn, that there are only 8 stitches. Beautiful! Maybe I should do one if it's that simple!
And Carol was working on those famous Chico chickens! Every quilt show our guild sells this chicken pin cushions. We've been selling them for years. I can tell you from experience these guys are addicting! You can't make just one and then you over do it and then you hate them!
Today there is a birthday celebration for Morning Stars 5th year. They are having a sale today starting at noon till 7 pm. Come on by for the sale and have some cake. I'll going and I may come home with something grand! If not, I'll still have fun!

Spooky Branches

I have started my Holiday quilt making. I'm super excited about Halloween and follow the rule that you can't have too many Halloween quilts. I was inspired by my challenge quilt and knew that I had to make a Halloween version. So here it is, the beginnings of a quilt.

This quilt will be a little bigger and the raven is going to be life sized. I have big plans for that raven, I only hope I can achieve them.

Today Gail and I are going to start a new project. I will try to keep you posted about that too.

There always seem as if there isn't enough time to go around! I have all these ideas in my head and I can't make my fingers do them fast enough. I want to do, do, do!

Tiny Basket Tutorial Two

Today we are going to take all those little baskets and turn them into a quilt.

The first step is to find a coordinating color for sashing and another for cornerstones. Here are mine.

1. Cut your sashing at 1 x 3 1/2. The cornerstones will be 1 x 1
2. You will need to cut a square to alternate with the baskets. Cut this squares the same size as the baskets, 3 1/2 x 3 1/2

(edit: After making this I discovered there is a correct way to do these set in triangles.

Start with a 5 1/4 inch square and cut both diagonals, making a quarter square triangle. This way is better so that there are no bias edges at the end of the quilt.)

There will also be setting triangles. these will be 5' squares cut diagonally. They will be big, but I would rather them too big than too small. If you know of a better way, feel free to use it.
3. Lay all your squares out and find a pleasing order.
4. Add the sashing and begin sewing the rows together. Press after every addition. Pressing toward the darkest color.

Trim, leaving a generous 1/4 inch.

5. Now lets add some fancy piping. Don't be scared. I used a very small piping (sorry I threw away the package so I have no idea how big) as big as a piece of cheap yard.

Cover the piping with fabric, making sure you have at least 3/4 of an inch to sew on either side of the piping. Use your zipper foot and make a tube long enough to fit your quilt.

I used those cornerstones as a guide. I laid the piping down between them and sewed as close to the piping as possible. You may want to use the same color thread here or later you may have to touch up your stitching with a maker.

Clip around your corners to ease the piping. You want a squarish corner.
6. When you add the border you should get a nice crisp corner. I cut my borders at 5".

7. Layer batting and a backing and start quilting. I just did a simple stitch in the ditch and quilted around each basket handle.
8. I scalloped the border and added feathers to it.

If you do this, remember to cut your binding on a bias to wrap around those scallops.

No Pictures Post

Ok, well I've been trying to upload pictures for more than 30 minutes and it's just not happening. So this will be a post with out pictures. Obviously, even Blogger hates Monday's too!

I had a wonderful weekend! I meet my new great nephew Cameron. He sure is a sweetie! There really isn't anything better than the smell of a baby!

My Daughter and I drove up to see the Family for the day and play with both boys. Big brother Parker was super excited to see cousin Bridgette. He went right up to her and petted her leg. Me, he tired to ignore most of the day. It must have been the spinach between my teeth! By the end of the day, he allowed me to hold him and play him.

It was a long drive to and fro, but worth it. It gave my Daughter and me time to talk and bond. Totally worth it!

I also spent some time sewing the branches for the raven quilt. I hope to have them finished today so I can get that raven onto the quilt. I have big plans for that raven!

Fabulous Friday Finds

This post is all about fabric. My ship came in this week and I scored some goodies.

We'll start off with Antoinette wearing her gorgeous new collar made of 30's feed-sacks. Doesn't she look beautiful? I'm half tempted to leave them here instead of finishing them. But we know they'll make a beautiful quilt, so persevere I must.
I'm seeing more owl quilts in my future. I found this fabric on-line and I knew I had to have some. My BFF and I have a plan for her brother using these fabrics. He and his family moved to Oregon and they are expecting a new baby. He now works in the logging industry and we thought he needed a spotted owl quilt. So when I saw this fabric I giggled and than bought 4 yards.
And this really special one! I found this one for my Son to match his own hearse. We think it's great! I know it's probably not on your list of wants this year, but we thought it was too perfect for my Boy.
And now the for the best thing that arrived in my mail box.

Remember Thelma's scrap give away?

That was delivered yesterday to a giddy, hysterical woman! I was excepting an envelope with some strips and such. I know Thelma said yardage but I still expected an envelope, not a large box!

First off, I want to show you what I already had and why I wanted to win her scraps.
That is a kit with just a few of the fabrics and a small pack of charm squares.

On the left is Thelma's "scraps" and on the right is my original packet. BIG difference!

Thelma wanted me to know that she "hoped I make a quilt from this fabric that I'll love as much as she loved her Route 44!"

A quilt? There's enough to make 2 quilts and probably enough left over scraps to make a wall hanging or two!

Thank you again Thelma! I really do have plans for these and can't wait to get started, as soon as I clear my plate a little.
Now on to the quilting.

I finished the buffet scarf, finally! I had been fooling around with too many other things (chores) and finally finished this up last night.

This shows the next step. I echoed inside the big circles around the little circles.
Than I got to the fun part, feathers! I added feathers around the large circles and added a few swirls to the background.
I apologize for the pictures. In the cameras monitor, they look just fine, but when I uploaded them, they are darker than I intended. You can click on any picture to make them bigger.
Here it is in use. This is what I wanted it for and I think it turned out beautifully.
Last night I cut out a raven and I'm so excited to start a Halloween quilt! But I need to put it aside till I finish my little basket tutorial. I really wish I had taken notes from the first one!

Quilt Rambles

Sorry, I got really busy yesterday and never got around to posting.

I decided to do a little fooling around and quilt up a linen dresser scarf. I knew I wanted to do something using a square because of the tatted (?) edging. So I cut of a cardboard template and made a diamond. Then surrounded that with a circle, to late surround in feathers.
I think my diamond is a little off, but hopefully that will just add to the charm.

I then quilted quarter inch lines inside the diamond.
And then I quilted circles. Aren't these fun!
It's not your imagination, I did use a darker thread. I didn't want this to totally hide. I wanted it to show when I put it on my buffet. I also wanted it to match my dishes, with the lines and circles.

Yesterday I meet up with Gail. I brought my red and yellow toile, feathered star to work on. I spent most of the afternoon stitching in the ditch. This can take forever, but it's totally worth the time. I hoping to get this done and put in our quilt show the October.

It's not too big, but I'm going to take my time with it. I'm also going to try to get feathers anywhere I can. Most of it won't show because of the toile, but I'll know they're there.

Off to start my day!

Tiny Basket Tutorial

I have been asked to do a tutorial on my tiny baskets. So here we go.

I started with 2 packs of charm squares. A charm pack is usually a line of fabric cut into 5 inch squares. Now if you don't have any charm packs, just cut your basket fabric into 5 inch squares.

Today I'll use this pack and make a small something to demonstrate. (Save that piece of cardboard in your pack, we'll be using it)
1. Cut the fabric that will be your baskets in half, on the diagonal, so that you end up with 2 triangles.

2. Next cut from those diagonals, a bias piece for the handle, at 3/4 of an inch.
3. The background, which will tie all those fabrics together, can be cut from yardage, or another charm pack. If you are using a charm pack, do exactly the same thing as you did with the basket fabric.

If you are using yardage, cut your squares at 3 7/8.

For every basket square, cut a background square.
4. Remember that cardboard piece, we'll be using it now. Take your Wonder Woman mug... oh, what you don't have one? Well use a normal everyday cup or mug and make a half circle. Make sure that it fits on your background triangle.
5. Take that template and cut it out and now use it to mark your background triangles for your handle placement.
6. Now it's time to use those 3/4 inch strips. I use a Hera marker (shown above) to mark my strips a little over an 1/8 of an inch.
7. Then fold those strips (they are cut on the bias) around the line. Pin and sew. I needle turned, you can do what ever method you're comfortable with.
8. After sewing the handle down, trim, then find their fabric mates and sew together. These little baskets will finish at 3 1/2 inches.

Continue this till you have as many basket blocks as you wish to have.
This is enough to get you going. I'll be continuing this next Tuesday and give you all another lesson to finish these little guys up.

Challenge Completed

I did it, I finished it, well all but the label. I feel good about what I did, and I had fun. That's all that counts. After I'm done here, I'll slap a label on and ship it off. Ahhhhhh, it's nice to be done.

I'm really happy with my tree. I think it looks real enough. Maybe I should do it again and this time put a raven in it and no flowers. It would be perfect for Halloween!
After making these geese, I want to do more. But I don't have anything lined up. Just that UFO basket calling to me. If only I had two more hands and more time!
I think we all learn something from every quilt, or we should. I'm not talking regrets, just something we have discovered. Like we need to work more at our piecing. Like some people drive closer to one side than the other. We need to be aware of our habits and change the bad ones.

This time I learned that I should have turned the geese more in a circle. What I did was add two short rows and than two longer rows. I should have turned those last two geese in the long row so it looked like they were going around the block.

I also learned that I really need to watch that quarter inch. I can be too generous. I need to learn consistency.

And I learned that I do like embroidery and that I should do more of it.

Last fall I bought a kit of the Saltbox fabrics. It was to make a small wall hanging. But here's the thing, I don't like it! And I never do what they tell you to. Unfortunately, this fabric was sold out and I hadn't seen it anywhere, as in local because I'm more into instant gratification. I knew I might get to this quilt sometime and I'd get mix other fabrics with it.

But Now I don't have to! I won Saltbox scraps from Thelma, of Cupcakes and Daisies! I'm so happy I can't wait to get started. I'll let you know when I do.

Slump

I'm a slacker. I didn't finish the quilting as I had hoped. I did finish the eggs, but I got distracted while marking the curved grid lines. No really I did. There was so many lines and I didn't know if they were right or wrong, so I just stoped. I may have needed a nap, but instead I dragged Gail to the fabric store. She didn't complain either. We were both in a slump and needed retail therapy.

Want to see what I bought?
Some Ghastly's! I've seen them around blog land and I just needed some, for what, I'll figure out at a later date.
I love the guy at the lower right end, he's walking an invisible dog. And that witch, she's so scary! Over to the left middle, there is a coven of witches with a cloud of angst in the air. And among all this creepiness, is a little girl in pink. How did she get here? Is she like the normal niece in the "Munsters"?

I was also looking around in the internets and I found a Robert Kaufman fabric that would be perfect for my son. It's a black Halloween fabric with purple, green and orange hearses. It would be perfect for him, truly perfect. Why? To go with his own hearse of course. My son is a serious collector of odd, the hearse being some of this.

That car is our go to in October. We may get looks, but it's the best car for the month of October. So I know he needs this fabric. But again I don't know what for. Hubby suggested boxers but I think he needs more. If you come up with anything, let me know.

Tis the beginnings of the weekend. I'm going to try really hard not to get distracted and get back to my quilting. I'm so close I can feel the binding around my neck. Good luck with all your weekend plans. See back here Monday.

Not Pebbles, Eggs

The first thing I did was make a shape, kind of like the top of an old-fashioned bird cage. Then I marked it all around the outer border.
By the time I got done with sewing on the blue line, I was all warmed up and ready. So I started doing eggs, not pebbles. Eggs are more appropriate than pebbles in this application, don't you think?

Than I started doing a curved cross-hatch.
Now they kind of look like seed pods, but I'm not removing it. I just learn what works and what doesn't. I was trying to make that outer border less flashy and more toned down.
I like they way it looks on the back, just not sure about the front.
I also quilted way more lines than necessary. I just wanted to have enough before I trim it down. It isn't suppose to measure more than 30 inches. Right now it measures at 35 inches.

I only completed two sides yesterday. But I'm still within my own time restraints. I'll get it done by this weekend, which is my goal.

Today I'll finish the other two sides and than comes the hard part, finding binding. Remember I was suppose to use 4 of their 6 fabrics. Well I used 5 so I'm good. I could only use 2 of my own fabrics, I only used 1, the branch fabric. But my question is, does the backing count? Because I used a left-over scrap, that I'm glad to see gone. I called and asked and was told by the representative "I'm pretty sure it doesn't count". She didn't make me feel all that confident. So my question to you is, do you think the backing counts as one of your own fabrics?

Cornered Geese

I'm back and with a much better picture! I really like how this is turning out. This is what I imagined in my head and it seems to look alright, so it stays. I'm also glad that there are only 44 geese! Even though I would probably do the same thing with a bigger quilt, cause I'm crazy like that.
Now today I going to tackle the last border. I have another idea in my mind, so we'll see if this works. But first I need to do some chores. Thank goodness it's just simple stuff like making bread and doing laundry. I probably won't fold the laundry, but it's no problem throwing it in the washer (I can convince myself to do anything else, just to avoid folding clothes!).

If my plan works out, I'll be doing some pebbles today. Have you tried pebbles? They are addicting. Once you start, you can't stop. Almost as fun as feathers, almost.

Air Born Geese

I did it. I actual sat down and did it. I wasn't feeling it but I made myself sit down and do 30 minutes of sewing. Now all the geese are done and I even started on the little triangles next to the geese, that'll be tomorrows pic.
I had a really hard time taking a picture of the quilting. Almost harder that doing the actual quilting! I tried every light, went outside and tried every angle. This is as good as it gets.

I started the little triangles and I did some more ripping out. I finally made up my mind and have a couple done, so that's todays goal. I can't guarantee there will be a better picture, because the aqua thread blends even better than the red does. But the quilting is making everything lay flat, it's job, so I'm happy with it.

Did you notice (those with eagle eyes) that these feathers aren't as fat? I put them on a diet. They are going carb free from now on. A skinny feather is a better feather, and you can get more in a small space, which just looks better.

A little quilting every day make Brandie a good girl! Practice, practice, practice, soon I'll have amazing super model feathers... NOT! But it won't hurt to practice.

Canyon View

What a weekend. I don't think I've been home except to sleep! Which of course means that I didn't get much quilting done. I quilted 4 geese and removed 2, for a big total of 2 geese. WOW!

But I did manage to make some fun. Have you ever seen these? So easy, just make a cupcake in a cone instead of a paper wrapper. Easy-peasy. Why did I make fake ice creams? To tease some kids of course!
Hubby and I went for a little camping trip to see my BFF and her (almost) entire family. There were about 14 kids, all under the age of 15, running around. It was utter chaos! They out numbered us adults. But I loved it. Why? Because I was to go home at some point and they are staying till the end of this week.

We hadn't been up to Lake Almanor for quite awhile and thought it would be fun to make a day trip.

So we followed the Feather River all the way up the mountain. Over several bridges...

This is one of my favorites. I love how you can see the train bridge along with the car bridge. This is known as the Pulga bridge. It was built in 1932 and it is still in constant use today. They estimate about 1500 cars cross it daily. I'm not going to think about that! But I do love the way it looks.
We went through 3 tunnels, cut into solid rock. This one is Grizzly Dome Tunnel.
All to arrive at a beautiful lake.
I'm going to state right here that I'm not a camper. I can't stand having dirty hands and don't get me started about bathing in a lake. But my BFF found a great camp site. It wasn't a free site, she had to pay for it, well share the cost with her 7 siblings, but totally worth it.

What a camp site! Not only do they have running water, it's hot. Not only are there actual flushing toilets, there are showers with hot water. Not only do they have a grill, they have a whole kitchen. I mean a whole kitchen. Two frigs, a microwave and a coffee maker. Oh did I mention power? Yeah, that too. And to top it all of, an ice machine!
They were 5 cabins with a central eating pavilion. This place had everything!
I wish we knew about this place back in the day when my kids were little. This could have been my type of camping.

So today I'm really going to try to sit down and quilt some geese. I have a deadline. The quilt needs to get to Keepsake Quilting by the 15th of August.

Thread Makeover

I had a dilemma, I had a messing work space. I didn't know how to keep all my threads in order. Specially when I had more than would fit on theses racks.

I love thread. I use it all the time. For applique, quilting and everyday stuff like mending. And each of these needs a different type and color. So I had a lot of thread and it was making me crazy trying to keep it all together and the area clean.

This was the old way, except that I had a quilt hanging over the threads to hide the mess.

So this is the before shot.
And this is the after.
The main focus was to get a containment system to house my threads. I think this may be it. But only time will tell. I could be doing this same post in about 6 months.

(Check out the cool old sewing machine drawer I picked up at an antique store. I have a total of 4 drawers, to hold up those books.

And how about my hezie valance? I figured, why keep it rolled up and put away with the fall stuff. Why not use it? It matches the room and it even hides a few books stacked on top of some others. Yes, I use quilts to hide messes!)
Each of these baskets has a different color of thread and each label tells me what is inside.

You can never have enough neutrals!

How about a blast from the past. The schoolhouse quilt. I managed to get it pinned. This thing is massive! It was bigger than the batting! There's a rethink in here, or a mis-mash to make it work. I'll decide when I get to it. Make the top and bottom border thinner or piece in some batting.
It's a biggem! It took forever to pin! Even with Gail's help, I was ready to give up.

But then I pinned another.
This was in my UFO basket. I've forgotten how long ago this was made. I go back and forth, do I like it or is it too busy? I love the toile but I don't love the red fabric. But I decided that from a distance, it's a keeper.

I never did get back to the challenge quilt. Maybe today I'll get lucky.

Of course the day hasn't started out the right way. That dog that lives outside, he was waiting for me at the front door when PugsLee and I went out for her morning constitutional. He's a good boy, just a big, dirty dog. PugsLee doesn't like him and goes crazy every time she sees him, which is everyday, silly girl!

So I had to pick her up and move them both to his yard. Yeah, the one he isn't suppose to be able to get out off. Hmmm. And of course the boys weren't awake to help me.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't in any danger, except from dirt. That dog is dirty! But he was so good, He walked back on his own and waited by the gate, all the while PugsLee is doing this Tasmanian devil imitation in my arms. Just not the usual morning.

So I need to go and make a trip to the feed store before I can get back to the fun stuff.

Chirp, Chirp

The quilting began on the challenge, but it was slow going. I only completed the middle and it felt like it took as long as the border on the basket quilt.

I didn't want a showy quilt job. I wanted that bird to stand alone. I think I succeeded. The bird and branches pop, while the background melts away. The thread (So Fine) also helps it blend. Next step, the geese.
I hung my baskets over my bed and I love it!
I goes so well with everything. I really love it and couldn't be happier with my rooms new look. Only problem, it now takes twice as long to make the bed. I get distracted easily.

Baskets Completed

I went back and discovered that this basket quilt was started in April of this year. I bought these charm packs just because Pineapple Linda told us all how beautiful they were.

Now I have to Thank her for my favorite quilt! I love these soft worn colors. I had a lot of fun with this quilt. Thank you Linda!
Completed and washed, what a great feeling. I love this quilt!
A little close up , but I'm still having problems showing the quilting.
I love the backs. They always show the best.
For a couple of packets of charms, with no really purpose, this turned into a great quilt. I wasn't rushed, I took my time and I had fun. This may be the first quilt I've finished for myself this year. I feel like I've been working on something for someone else all year. This feels good to complete something without a due date. Now if only I can do the same thing with the Schoolhouses.

I have started the quilting on the Challenge, but it's slow going. I've only done some ditch quilting and am fearful of the real quilting. I know, silly. I need to follow my own advice and just get in there and do it!

Today I'm going to see Gail and now that I've finished the baskets, I think I'll try to get those Schoolhouses sandwiched. That will also take my mind off the quilting around the bird. I know deep breathes...

Final Basket Border

I've been plugging away at the basket quilt. A little bit each day. First I started with my scallops and then I thought and thought about how to get those feathers in there. I had tried to put the feathers on the inside of the scallops and that just didn't work, so I improvised.
Then I finally figured out how to make the feathers work on the outside, add a swirl!

I know this looks like orange fabric, it's not. It's a beautiful red, my camera just doesn't like it.
I have used more blue pens than you could imagine, marking this quilt over and over. It really needs bath!

How about the back, is this better?
The last detail, after the feathers. I like it and I'm too tired to remove any quilting.
I've noticed that I tend to make fat feathers. But they are just unique to me. Like a fingerprint. Maybe.

The next step is to get the binding on, then I can devote myself to the challenge quilt.

Challenge, part 4

My fabric arrived in Saturday's post so I finished up the top of my Challenge!

I was super excited and got right to work. I finished up those geese and then went on to the last border.
This isn't the best picture, being indoors and all, but you get an overall look.
Than the last border. Part of the challenge is to use 4 of their fabrics. I've done this with the script fabric, the black flange fabric, the geese fabrics and the border fabric. The border isn't one of my favorites, but I'm going to try to quilt it out. It's a little busy for my tastes, but I'll improvise somehow.
I did piece the last border together, I tried to cut some uglier pieces out.
Now to get it sandwiches and start quilting it.

In other news, I've been finishing up the basket quilt's last border. I'm hoping to have pictures for you tomorrow of the completed quilting.

I'm so happy because I figured out how to get some feathers in that border. But don't tell me if you don't like it, it'll hurt my confidence level at this moment.

Dirty Dresdens

Yesterday I worked on my dirty old dresdens. I managed to put together all the cut pieces and ended up with 10 plates. As Gail said, this will make an odd shaped quilt with 2 X 5 block rows.
Each plate will be laid on a 20 inch background of unbleached muslin. So my current thought is to make a 3 X 3 and use the extra block to make a pillow. Who knows what I will end up doing by the time I finish these.
I also quilted part of the final border in the basket quilt. I marked and spray so many times to come up with a feather design in the border and I couldn't. But I came up with another pattern that looks great with what I already quilted, so I'm happy. When I finish that border, I'll let you all see.

I was really hoping that my package of challenge fabrics would have arrived by now. I know their shipping time isn't up yet, I just hoped I get those fabrics sooner than later. That poor bird is just hanging there all lonely and ready for flight. Well maybe today...

A Dino-Hunter Vest

I have a book recommendation for anyone who likes to make kids clothes. This great vest is from that book and I loved making it and the little boy who received it is using it to hunt dinosaurs.

When I saw this pattern in the book I knew I had to make it and when Jake's Birthday came around, it gave me the chance to try out the book.
What boy wouldn't like all these pockets? And check out those buttons. I thought they looked like dino-skin.
The main reason I bought this book was for that cute red cape, but I've since found I like all the patterns. So if you're in the market for kids clothes, check this book out!
Jake's big brother Hunter has been growing a garden and I left with a beautiful zucchini yesterday. Some people don't know what to do with zucchinis. Me, I love them and will eat them with anything. One of my favorite ways is to grill them. Slice them long ways. Put a little oil on them. Season with salt and pepper and throw them on the grill. Delicious!
But last night I throw the on some pizza. Yummy! Added a few olives, tomato slices, fresh basil and sprinkled with fontina cheese.
Then I went a little weird and used leftover pork tenderloin pieces with some zucchini. I was really surprised how well this pizza turn out. I had made the pork with a tomatillo sauce but the flavors worked very well together. When I was growing up, my Grandmother was famous for putting leftovers together and them being even better the second time around. Now the woman couldn't make a hamburger without it being too hard to eat or spaghetti, but her leftovers were wonderful.

I think I've inherited that gene, just with pizza. I think I may try this more often. How about a mac-n-cheese pizza? Add some bacon to it and it may make me famous.

I have no sewing plans today, so I may not be back tomorrow.

Star Blocks

I've been working on my star blocks this weekend. I joined a Christmas star quilt along. As you can see, my colors aren't Christmasy so hopefully they won't kick me out of the club.

Every month there has been a different star and I just finished the sixth, so I felt it was time to show you.

I signed up late for this quilt-along and I don't even know if how it is suppose to look when done. Maybe the others do? But I'm still having fun and it's quite easy to do two blocks, of the same pattern, every month. Makes me think that we should do something like this.

It being a Monday, I want to prolong my weekend, but I at least need to clean my dishes! Garfield had it right about Mondays! I hate them as much as I hate folding laundry. ) sigh (

Orphan Pieces

Several years ago I inherited these dresden plates. I had put them away and just came across them. I had forgot all about them. Pretty sad I know!

So I took them out of their bag and I found two plates mostly complete. I also found a pile of pieces that need to be sewn together.
I don't have any idea of their age. But I will find out someday. They are stiff and dirty, but there is no way I can wash them till I appliqué them down.
So once again I have a take along project! I love these little things that can be pulled out in the doctors office or during boring meetings. After I finish the basket handles, I've just been twiddling my thumbs. Last night I had one of the afore mentioned meeting and it helped to keep me for being too bored. And just think, someday I'll have an heirloom, all from forgotten pieces.

Challenge, part 3

After precise cutting and trimming, I have finish half of the next layer. Why only half? Because this was as far as I could get with two fat-quarters. I have two more geese left, but no enough to make a entire row. So I will put this on the back burner till I receive more fabric, in 7 to 10 days. Which is going to seem an eternity!
I'll leave you with a close-up of my beautiful feet.
Maybe I'll grow up to be half as good as Sandra Leichner. Boy that would be wonderful! But boy do I have a long way to go!

Challenge, part 2

Is this less scary? Not so gloomy and creepy anymore? I Put A Bird On It!
This bird came from the focus fabric and I cut around it and needle turned it down. I was going to lose the legs, so I just embroidered some new ones. And I think they look even better!

Part of the Challenge is to use four of the six fabrics provided. Here you are seeing three. The script background is one. The bird is two. That little tiny flange (influenced by Lynn) is three.

I can add two of my own fabric and all the embellishments I want. So My first fabric is the tree brown branches.
I inherited these gold flowers from my Grandmother. They've been in my lace box for years! Originally they were a strip of lace, I just cut them apart and Presto, blossoms! I just love that bit of sparkle.

My next step is to make a border of flying geese, but I've run out of fabric. So I called and will be receiving more, within 7 to 10 days.

But don't worry, I'll keep busy! I still have my baskets to finish quilting and I have some stars to make, so I'll be busy.

Today Gail and I are getting together and since it's Summer vacation, that means we have all day, not just after school hours (Gail is a teacher in her spare time and I have to share her with her students. Kind of a bummer on some days, those pesky kids!).

Challenge, part 1

I started the challenge quilt yesterday. I brought out all the fabrics. I even washed them because that was part of the instructions. Otherwise, I never do. I like to live dangerously!

Then I ironed them and started thinking... hhhhmmmmmm....
Of course that worded fabric has to be the background. So I cut that fat quarter into a perfect square.

Next I added really uneven tree branches. I have to tell you, needle turning those branches and making them more tree like and less straight was really hard. But I had cut my strips on the bias and just let go.
Then I added thinner branches with floss. Looks kind of Halloweeny, doesn't it?
Like a scary movie. But don't worry, I'm going to lighten it up and make it happier.

And next time I hope the pictures don't turn out so dark. I did even notice how dark they were till I loaded them. So tomorrow I have less gloomy pictures and a less gloomy block.

Changes

A change has been made.

I finished the monkey blocks but I knew I wasn't happy. Would you be happy with this quilt if you were having a girl?

I wasn't. I haven't been thrilled with this quilt from the beginning. It just isn't girly enough. And when I showed it to my Daughter Thursday night, I could see in her eyes that she wasn't happy with it either. So a change has been made.
But with some help. Maximus spent the weekend with us and he has made himself at home pretty much anywhere he wants! Here I am jamming to finish the binding on Friday morning (before my brilliant thought seeped in). This little dog is more cat like than I'm accustom to. He fits into tiny places and can jump higher than expected.

So after moving Maximus, I got down to business. I pulled out some pink fabric I wanted to used from the beginning (Anew from Lecien). Why didn't I just use it before? The Daughter had heard that they parents didn't want to have a girly girl and were looking for uni-sex colors. But then she went to their new house and saw that they were using pink. So I took that and ran with it and here is what I came up with...
I started this Friday around 11 and finished the binding Saturday around 2. I know, I know, it's not a monkey, but I keep saying I can only draw simple things and a monkey is not one of them! Not bad for a quick change in the middle of the stream! I admit that I cheated and used "misty fuse". I couldn't have finished this in time if I had needle turned this.
And the quilting is just some swirls which go quite fast! The babies name is on there as well, so now they have to keep it!

BTW, the Daughter loved this one. In fact she loved this one so much, she claimed it as her own work. She really is a stinker!

I just glad to be finished, so now I can take a breathe and move on to something new.

I signed up for a Keepsake Quilting Challenge. I'll show you more tomorrow. Today I'm going to try to get started on that. I have to have a small quilt mailed off to them before August 15 th. So I must get busy!

But I now have a sort of plan. It all started with that branch from the pink quilt. I loved that! And maybe I work well under pressure. Because I'm really pleased with that pink quilt. Granted my little owl is a bit portly, but he's still cute.

Dare to be Different

As I was telling you yesterday, Last night was our guilds anniversary. We usually celebrate with a potluck, where everyone brings a salad. I just had to be different, so I made focaccia.

It starts with a lovely dough, with a little potato mixed in to keep it moist. Won't to try it?

Start by boiling a medium potato till soft (when cooked, mash). While that cooks...

Mix, 1/2 cup flour

1/2 warm water

1 1/2 ts. yeast ... till combined. Cover and let sit till bubbly.

Then add...

3 cups flour

1/2 cup warm water

2 TBS olive oil

1 1/4 ts. salt

and that potato ... Then let it rise for about an hour.

After it has rested for an hour and doubled in size, press into a large baking sheet. Wet your hands and spread that dough across the entire pan. You can also spread the dough as it rises, as it relaxes again. Let it rise again 45 - 60 minutes.

Next dimple the dough with your finger tips, it'll look like the picture below.

Now drizzle it with about 2 more TBS of olive oil, and course salt and pepper. You can also chop up about 2 TBS rosemary if you're lucky enough to have some growing in your yard.

Baked at 425 for 25 minutes, till golden brown.

Fresh out of the oven.

Monkey Squares

Well here it is, a very fast and simple quilt. I went through all the scrap boxes and found enough blues, a few pinks and some greens. I did actually have to go into my fabric stash for some more greens, but I still have more greens then any other color.

The monkey border is not sewn in yet, I was just giving you a quick peek.
When I do sew the monkey border on, none of the red is going to show.
Hopefully today I'll get this quilt done. But I have a very full day. Busy, busy, busy. Sometimes these days are the worst. You feel rushed and then you start sweating, and I Hate sweating!

Tonight is Guild night and this is our anniversary party, but I still need to get up in front of the microphone and talk, so I really don't want to be sweaty!

So before I make myself crazy with my list for today, I'll leave you with happy thoughts of monkeys.

Fat-Quarter Dresses

Aren't fat-quarters so versatile? You can do so many things with them. Sure we buy them for quilts, but I just used a bundle to make two dresses, and I still have three left to make another.

So next time you buy a fat-quarter bundle, consider make baby dress or two.
I bought these at a quilt show, with no plans for them, except that I liked the colors. The only thing that didn't come from a FQ, is the lining slip and eyelet.
Now the twins have almost matching clothes, which is how mom dresses them. Hopefully mom will like these dresses. They are pink and orange, her colors.
I promise to take a picture if we can get them to wear them.

I also cut up about 40 (more that I need, but you never know if all the blocks will be perfect, so I make more than I need) new blocks for that quick quilt that my daughter needs by Sunday. I swear, cutting takes more time that sewing. To me cutting is like folding laundry. I hate it!
This is that monkey fabric we found. It was part or a border print. Along with it were a row of elephants, a row of giraffes and a large border of everything. So today I need to get busy and sew those blocks together and get it done. Only 5 days to go. No slacking on this one!
